Perez was just a call-in on Fox News talking about Russell Brand's attack on the boys about their purity rings & he said he was seated right across from the boys and they remained neutral faced over what was being said & tried to remain calm over it but Perez was getting angry FOR them.
I feel so bad for them, honestly. It was this major award show for them and MTV couldn't have picked a worst host. No one ripped apart Miley for wearing a purity ring. No one rips apart Jordin Sparks or Hilary Duff. It was uncalled for completely and in all honesty, I don't think MTV had THAT many one liners about their purity rings scripted.
MTV [from my view] has a lot of respect for the boys - from their live & mobile specials, their buzzworthy features and making the boys the Artists' of the Week. I don't see how they would have brought them onto the awards show solely to be targeted and publicly embarrassed the way they were by that filthy european trash.
The three of them have never done anything but made good music, worked hard to be where they are and said nothing but good things about every single person they've ever been asked about. I don't see where they deserved to be put on the spot over and over again last night at such a major awards show they were so honored to attend and perform at.
I found it interesting the camera was NOT on them during any of his ridiculing and was ONLY put on the three of them directly when the host gave a meager apology [which wasn't really an apology in my opinion].
I think both Russell and MTV owe the boys a huge apology because what happened last night was unprofessional on MTV's part. It was pathetic and no one person let alone a twice nominated band deserves to go through what they were put through.
I'm so angry at MTV; not even because the boys didn't win. But because of what they were forced to sit through when it was such a huge night for them. One of the commentators on Fox News said it's their choice to remain pure & say they have purity rings & that is their burden to take on in the media and the news anchor argued back at her that it is NOT their burden. It's a choice they made that should be respected in the media.
It's so funny how choices that go against the norm of society are considered 'burdens' to be 'defended' and not choices that are to be respected.

:: CLAPPING AND STANDING UP :: Agreed 100%.
The only thing I want to add to this is Mad props need to go out to the Jonas Brothers. Everyone is pointing fingers at Russell Brand and MTV (more the former than the later), but I think something needs to be said about the guys. I don't speak for them, but I want to say this: I love them, and I have always held them in such high esteem. But, after last night I hold them at an even higher esteem. They could have turned last night into a HUGE ordeal. They could have made a scene, they could have lashed back, but you know what. They haven't and THAT is why I applaud them. They have enough courtesy and respect that even when someone bashes them on live TV, they hold their heads high, smile, and applaud. Props to you Jonas Brothers. Your parents are proud, and I know that millions of fans are mad, but are proud of what you did! YOU GO JONAS BROTHERS!!!!!

amen sisters! i also feel that this was way more Russell Brand's doing than MTV's. i just don't think that MTV would want to put anyone through that kind of humiliation. the guys handled it like the pros that they are and we should all be so proud of them!

Lis, GREAT post, and Cara also....I agree with every word written! I was so angry yesterday and still am, because they are awesome, respectful boys, regardless of when they choose to lose their virginity, and they did not deserve to be set up like that. I really and truly hope someone in JB's management team chewed some MTV tail because they deserved it. Joe and Nick in particular looked so embarrassed.

I'm not a fan of Jordin Sparks, but I was so happy that she stood up for the boys on stage. I have so much respect for her now.

And here is their response to the whole mess. As usual, they are classy gentlemen...
Now in the U.K. promoting the "Camp Rock" film after their appearance at the Video Music Awards last weekend, the Jonas Brothers spoke with the BBC about Russell Brand's controversial verbal jabs at them during the show. Brand poked fun at the boys for their purity rings and abstinence pledges.
"For us, it's cool to see that he recognizes we are gentlemen," Nick, 15, said.
His older brother, Kevin, 20, speculated that Brand miscalculated the audience. "I think he focused on certain things and didn't move off of them," he said. "People's attention spans in America need more than that."
They also seem to be fans of the comic. "I think he did a good job [at the show]," Nick said. "We saw him on Conan O'Brien and thought he was hilarious."
And the boys didn't let Brand's comments spoil their night. The trio, who performed their single "Lovebug" during the show, just let it slide off their backs. "We had a lot of friends there and everybody's so nice. We had a good time," Kevin added.
Other celebrities already reacted negatively to Brand's comments about the Jonas Brothers. During the show, "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks rushed to the band's defense, saying "I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It's not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody — guy or girl — wants to be a slooot."
And Paris Hilton also defended the group after the show. She said, "I don't pick on them. That's something cool for a kid to keep, so don't pick on them for that."
And Paris' (sort of) namesake, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton came to their defense as well, telling MTV News after the show, "I think those Jonas Brothers are good kids, and we shouldn't be making fun of them for promoting good values."

After watching the VMAs I like Russel Brand and want to learn more about him. I dont think he did anything wrong in the least. The host is suppose to rip into the artists in the audience, just because his main targer was The Jonas Brothers doesnt mean he was being vindictive. No offense but they should consider themselves lucky that a famous British personality even knows who they are and thinks they are worth his time to make a joke about.

I do agree with you in the fact that most host do say something about the nominees and the crowd. And I do think it is GREAT that Russell Brand knows who the Jonas Brothers are, and I do think they are very honored for that. I knew the bashing was coming as did most people, but my question is, where is the bashing towards others? Why single out one group? Did you hear about Christina? T-Pain? T.I.? Pink? Miley? Katy Perry? Obviously, you see where I am going with this...

I honestly think maybe Russel kinda liked them and in focusing on them that was his way of expressing it. I dont go to Perez's site a lot but he spends a lot of time talking about the jonas brothers because he likes them; maybe that was what Russel was doing but because he is a comedian it went that route. Is Miley famous in the UK? I say that because Im wondering if he knows who both of them are and decided he liked JB more or if he just doesnt know who Miley is and knows who The Jonas Brothers are? Either way yay for them. I admit I did not watch all the show all the way through and I will admit he could have dropped the jokes after awhile because the same joke repeated gets lame.

Ugh. I probably should leave this one alone. He got under my skin in a big way. The sad thing is, the kind of publicity he got from this stint, you can't buy. He'll come out a winner in the end, which stinks, in my opinion.
